SInce we started back to class in January, we began our new unit called, If Not Now, When? These words are part of Pirkei Avot 1:14 and are attributed to Hillel. We studied Pirkei Avot 1:15: “Say little and do much.” Then we listened to a story by Yiddish writer, I.L. Peretz called, If Not Higher. The story is a very interesting one about a rabbi’s anonymous acts of gemilut chasadim. Then we discussed the words of Rabbi Tarfon (2:20 and 2:21), “The day is short, the work is much.”, and “It is not your duty to complete the work, but neither are you free to refrain from it.” Students worked in small groups to generate a list of important things in life and small steps that they can take to make a difference.
