We recently completed our unit on Gevurah (strength). Students wrote and performed skits that showed how Gevurah is required to resist negative peer pressure. We also discussed the benefits of positive peers, and how that kind of support and encouragement can increase our personal Gevurah. The class also acted out skits from the story of David and Jonathan, focusing on the kind of Gevurah that Jonathan showed in being a good friend. Fifth graders also learned about the two famous Jewish Americans, Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster, who were the creators of Superman. Siegel and Shuster demonstrated Gevurah by not giving up, even though their idea for Superman was rejected many times before someone finally showed interest. Superman, the Man of Steel, is a character based on many Jewish values, including Gevurah.
