Last semester we learned about the Days of Creation, How GOD created the world and on the 7th day he rested, (Shabbat).  When we came back after winter break we have been talking about Shabbat rituals, customs, etc.  We learned that each Friday evening, families around the world begin the celebration of Shabbat. For many, the evening includes favorite foods, company for dinner, special songs, and blessings. On Shabbat, families take a break and spend time together and with their community. On the eve of Shabbat (Friday evening) we learned about lighting the candles which bring in Shabbat and set it apart from the weekday. Immediately after lighting candles, special blessings are said over the wine or grape juice, challah, and in many families, over the children as well.  We have been making some of the items that we use for Shabbat such as challah cover, Shabbat placemat, challah, and challah plate.  We are also learning the prayers that are said over the wine or grape juice, challah and the candles.  We will be learning about ending Shabbat. We learn that there is a ceremony called Havdalah that separates Shabbat from the rest of the week. The yeladim will learn all the rituals and customs associated with Havdalah.
