On the first day of the second month, in the second year following the exodus from the land of Egypt, the Eternal One spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai – Numbers 1:1
These opening words of this week’s Torah portion Bamidbar, meaning “in the wilderness”, speak to both ancient and contemporary times. The Israelites continue to wander in the wilderness of Sinai as they make their way through vast uncharted territory on their way to the Promised Land. Existing in a wild unfamiliar place can be unnerving and scary. Who knows what unseen dangers might lurk ahead as the journey continues bamidbar. But still, living bamidbar can also have its own rewards. It can lead to personal discovery and growth.
God spoke to Moses and the Israelites many times bamidbar, boldly guiding, as the Israelites overcame many challenges and united together as nation. Presently, might we go as far to describe our current situation as bamidbar? Our travels are limited, but in this chapter of our lives we are wandering in unchartered territory, at times fearful and bewildered as we navigate each day. When we feel fear, our history reminds us that we as a people have faced adversity before. In each situation, no matter how difficult, we banded together, we prevailed and we emerged stronger.
This Torah portion reminds us that we are never truly alone. God who was with the ancient Israelites bamidbar is with each of us now. God hears our prayers. God gives us new strength.
Our faith is our compass and our sacred values as our map. There is always a path forward. There is always a way to the Promised Land. Bamidbar is just a stop along the way.
May God bless you and keep you. May you be blessed with a week of peace.
