…the staff of Aaron, of the tribe of Levi, had sprouted: it brought forth buds, it produced blossoms and borne almonds. Numbers 17:23
Our Parshah of the week, Korach, describes a divisive rebellion, deep communal strife and a plague that claimed the lives of thousands. In the midst of such troubled times, Moses discovers that the wooden staff of Aaron had suddenly budded, blossomed and borne almonds! This astounding event of a carved rod suddenly sprouting and producing a fruit was seen by Moses and the people as a miracle; a sign from God of reassurance and hope.
In our own times of national strife, illness and adversity, this Torah portion reminds us that even in the midst of hardship and challenge there are miracles to be found and appreciated. It takes time to ever fully rectify the ills of society, we should not let ourselves surrender to despair. We can never give up hope or stop striving to fix our broken world. At the same time, our portion urges us to notice and appreciate the goodness that is ours to enjoy.
Among the many miracles that surround us this first week of summer are the blossoming, blooming plants and flowers which fill our eyes with delight and our hearts with hope. Each day find time to marvel at the natural beauty that is all around. Such sights will lift your spirits and give you new strength. Perhaps whenever you notice a colorful flower or any small-scale wonder of Creation, say a blessing thanking God for the goodness and hope that God provides us with everyday.
We praise You, Eternal God, Sovereign of the universe, who makes the works of creation.
May God bless you and keep you. May you be blessed with a week of peace.
