Voting is a Sacred Task

Nov1

On both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur we, as a congregation, recited a prayer for our nation which included the words: “Cause us to see clearly that the well-being of our nation is in the hands of all of our citizens.”

What these words remind us is that it is not enough to simply ask God to protect and bless our country. Each of us has a role and responsibility as citizens to see to the welfare of the United States. We ourselves must act upon our values and beliefs to create the kind of country we would like to see for ourselves and our children.

This sacred task, of course, begins by voting in the Midterm Elections on Tuesday, November 6th.

Over the last few months, our Tzedek Social Justice Committee has worked diligently to have Beth Tikvah Congregation be a congregation where 100% of eligible voters vote this month. Toward this endeavor, a group of dedicated volunteers have supported non-partisan registration drives, they have made calls to congregants, offered rides and babysitting to anyone who needs extra help on Election Day to be able to vote and they have gone out of their way to increase voter turnout. We are grateful for their efforts and we know that their non-partisan voter engagement project will not only increase our ability to advance policies that reflect our Jewish values but will help us actualize our prayers, our values and beliefs through action. So, please, please vote and if you have any questions about voting, please go to https://www.cookcountyclerk.com/service/your-voter-information

Baruch ata Adonai, Eloheinu melech haolam she-me’tzapeh me-itanu l’asok ezachut ha’medina.

Blessed are you, Adonai our God, Sovereign of the Universe, who expects us to engage as citizens in our country.

B’shalom,

Rabbi Taron Tachman
