As of November 11, 2021, Beth Tikvah Congregation has updated our Covid Health and Safety Guidelines. We have many great events coming up for Hanukkah.

We Won and We Learned

Deb Bakal, Temple President

When my children were younger, Jeff and I would often ask after a chess tournament or a sporting event, “Did you win or did you learn?” I loved this way of framing the competition–no matter what the outcome was, it was positive. For us at Beth Tikvah, with the recent URJ (Union for Reform Judaism) congregational survey, I would say we had the rare experience in which we both won and learned. Not only did we complete the survey in record...Read more...

“A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent-and heterosexual.”

So began my son Zach’s personal essay for college admission back in 2009 paraphrasing the Scout Law that all scouts learn and repeat often. Even as a newly minted Eagle Scout he struggled with...Read more...

Nothing is so painful to the human mind as a great and sudden change.
- Mary Wollenstonecraft Shelley

Change is natural; change is good; change is difficult. Our leadership has changed as it does every year, and I am honored to be the new president of our congregation. I have been on the board of the temple since 2003 and have enjoyed being active and contributing to our community. Now I step up to the...Read more...

Well here it is, my last Tikvahite Article as President. I truly cannot believe how fast these two years have flown by! So many wonderful things have happened over the last two years; and some not so wonderful things too. Through it all we stood together as the caring, loving community that Beth Tikvah is.

I truly must thank all of you for your support, advice, friendship and caring spirit. I have truly enjoyed our many conversations...Read more...

After a long hard winter comes the spring - my favorite season! The rebirth of the trees, the flowers, the grass, the green and the shining sun, oh the beautiful SUN! Oh yeah, and it also happens to be the season that my youngest son was born too! The caterpillars become butterflies, the robin’s eggs hatch into beautiful red breasted birds…well you get the picture. So too is it the time when the long awaited Our House Lobby Renovation...Read more...

Todah Rabah to ALL the Jewper Heroes of Beth Tikvah!

As Moana explained to Te Fiti, “Sometimes our strengths lie beneath the surface. Far beneath in some cases.” There is no doubt in my mind that at Beth Tikvah we all have many wonderful strengths!

My heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who had the strength and the vision to make our congregational retreat happen so beautifully! Starting with Ruth...Read more...

In Times of Trouble We Need Each Other

Terrie O'Day

In trying times such as these we are reminded of the importance of community. We are reminded of how much we need each other. This past month has been a very difficult time in our Jewish community and in the world around us; the horrific tragedy and loss of life at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh hit so close to home for many in our community; the senseless shooting in a college bar in Thousand Oaks, CA and all the other tragic...Read more...

Make Our Voices Heard

Terrie O'Day

This November is election month - the mid-terms. Historically, this type of election has not seen a strong turnout. In the current climate of our world, no matter what side of the fence you are on politically, it is crucial that we get out and VOTE! We must make our voices heard, and the mid-term elections are where it directly impacts us. It is our constitutional right, and we are so blessed to have that right when so many other countries do...Read more...

And so we have completed another circle around the sun, another year in the books: goodbye to 5778, hello to 5779. I hope that you all have had a joyous Rosh Hashanah and a meaningful Yom Kippur. There has been so much to be grateful for, so much love and happy occasions, so much loss as well. All lifecycle events that have to be celebrated and accepted. We celebrate happy occasions together and we are there to mourn loss and sad occasions...Read more...

A Year For Opportunities

Shalom!
As the New Year approaches I am thinking about all of the wonderful things that have happened in the last year, and more
importantly all of the things left undone. Community and people that were helped, friendships that were made or strengthened, plans that were carried out or started, and so on. There has been much good done, but there is still much more to do. People that need our help and our friendship in our congregation,...Read more...

Beth Tikvah, a place that I love…How about you?

Why do you love Beth Tikvah? What do you think needs improvement at Beth Tikvah? If you could change one thing about Beth Tikvah what would that be? If you could do something to make a difference here what would you do? How do you want your children to feel about their Judaism? About Beth Tikvah? How can you support and encourage that? How can WE support and engage YOU?

We LOVE...Read more...
